Piracy crowds out 77,400 jobs, SEK 24 billion in tax revenue, and SEK 90 billion in value creation in Sweden

Today, the annual report “Intellectual Property, Jobs & Prosperity in the Nordic Region” is launched. The report aims to raise awareness about the value of intellectual property and highlight the significant challenges we face with infringements. The report shows that piracy and trademark counterfeiting lead to the displacement of 193,500 jobs, SEK 246 billion in value creation, and SEK 66 billion in tax revenue in the Nordic region.

Out of these, 77,400 jobs would have existed in Sweden, according to the report’s estimates. Additionally, SEK 24 billion in tax revenue and SEK 90 billion in value creation are also crowded out in Sweden.

These levels of infringement are unacceptable if Sweden is to continue being a successful country in innovation and creativity. We need modern legislation that provides adequate protection for rights holders.

The report has been written by Dr Nima Sanandaji on behalf of the network A Modern Intellectual Property Law, which consists of a broad group of companies and organizations from diverse sectors united by a common desire to continue investing in intellectual property.
