“The playoffs in the SHL are in full swing, and soon, this year’s champion will be crowned. However, behind all the exciting evenings in front of the TV lies one of the biggest threats to the future of Swedish sports: illegal IPTV.”
Thus begins the debate article published today in Dagens Industri, where the network A Modern Intellectual Property Law raises the important issue of piracy in connection with the SHL playoffs. The article titled “Illegal IPTV – One of the Biggest Threats to Hockey” focuses on the impact illegal IPTV has on hockey in Sweden, the clubs in the SHL, and society at large.
Revenue from TV rights is significant for the clubs in the SHL, accounting for 25 to 50 percent of their income. Decreased revenues lead to reduced resources for all aspects of the clubs’ activities, including youth sports.
In connection with the debate article, this year’s report “Intellectual Property, Jobs & Prosperity in the Nordic Region” is being launched today, which states that piracy and trademark counterfeiting result in the loss of 77,400 jobs, SEK 24 billion in tax revenue, and SEK 90 billion in value creation, just in Sweden.
