Sale of Bitcoins in Viking IPTV

In 2024, a man was convicted of administrating the illegal iptv service Viking IPTV. He received a suspended sentence and daily fines and was ordered to pay substantial damages to affected film and television companies. In connection with the police raid on the man, the police seized a Bitcoin wallet containing approximately 12.77 Bitcoins. The verdict notes that the man accepted payments via Bitcoin and PayPal for Viking IPTV’s services. The preliminary investigation indicates that the man earned significant proceeds from the crime. The man himself has told the newspaper Expressen that his turnover was approximately 12 million SEK per year, with about 80% of that as profit.

That criminals earn enormous sums from illegal iptv is no news; it is evident in most judgments and investigations. The convicted man withdrew his appeal last autumn, and the Patent and Market Court’s ruling thus became legally binding. The Swedish Enforcement Authority has now sold the seized 12.77 Bitcoins for SEK 9,550,000. The media calls the sales a “record auction“.
