10 Years of Responsible Advertising

It has now been 10 years since The Swedish Advertisers (Sveriges Annonsörer), in cooperation with Rights Alliance (Rättighetsalliansen), launched its groundbreaking warning list of illegal websites where reputable advertisers should not appear.

Making the right choice the easy choice
Since its launch in 2015, the list has been an effective tool for reducing advertising revenues to criminal networks and a support for responsible marketing.

As new domains have emerged, the list has been continuously updated to remain a relevant tool.

The initiative has not only made an impact on the Swedish market – it has also inspired similar warning lists and debate on the global stage.

Through collaboration with IAB Sweden (IAB Sverige) and The Swedish Media Agencies (Sveriges Mediebyråer), the work with the warning list now reaches even more stakeholders in the industry.

Illegal services remain a constant problem
The problem with pirate services is far from over. Illegal IPTV and illegal streaming continue to be a serious issue, and part of the revenue comes from advertising. Pirate services are driven by financial gain and do what they can to continue generating advertising income, for example by changing domains. This means that advertisers must remain vigilant and proactive.

– Advertising finances many illegal services. The active responsibility advertisers take for where they place their ads and how they protect their brand therefore remains highly important.
Sara Lindbäck, Legal Counsel, Rights Alliance

– The credibility of an advertiser’s brand is undermined if it appears on illegal websites. It is crucial that these sites cannot continue to exist by receiving money from reputable advertisers.
Ulrika Wendt, Legal Counsel, The Swedish Advertisers

– The credibility of the industry is built on an advertising market characterised by responsibility. The warning list is a clear example of how the fight against illegal websites must be conducted both long-term and proactively. Together we need to guide advertisers away from these environments.
Anna Granditsky, CEO, The Swedish Media Agencies

– By updating the warning list, we make it easier for advertisers to avoid these illegal websites – it is a concrete step towards a more responsible and sustainable advertising market.
Kenneth Danielsson, CEO, IAB Sweden
