Person behind illegal IPTV service has to pay millions in damages

Last Friday the person behind the illegal IPTV service MacIPTV was convicted for copyright crime and serious accounting fraud. He was sentenced to probation and 140 hours of community service and has to pay 2 million SEK in damages to the rights holders.

According to the police investigation the service had around 3000 users and had sold subscriptions for 2,8 million SEK through Paypal or Bitcoin. At the search of the mans home the police found a bitcoin wallet with 18 bitcoins (approx 6,2 million SEK), that was emptied at the time for the last police questioning of the man.

The court states that the illegal IPTV service used information that made the consumers believe that it was a legal service. The verdict can be appealed until February 18th.
